“I WAS ADDICTED TO DRUGS ALL MY LIFE”


By September 2004, I was in the final stage of a long, unsuccessful battle against drug addiction. My life was in chaos – heroin addicted, homicidal and suicidal; looking back now, I’m sure I would have died soon. I was 46
years old and had moved out of my home, away from my wife of 23 years and my four year old daughter. I was losing my business and everything else that had mattered to me. I couldn’t stop using. My life could be summed up by Romans 7:15 “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do”.

God had plans for me though. Several people performed an intervention. I agreed to go into the Teen Challenge program. That day, the absolute worst day of my life, has turned out to be the best day of my life. Within a week I
found out what salvation meant, and for the first time I really felt what Paul was talking about when he wrote in Philippians 3:10-11 and said “I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead”. I have been clean since that day I entered
Teen Challenge.


My life has been restored, and I am blessed beyond measure. I am reunited with my family. I have found the freedom that Paul wrote about in Galatians 5:1 “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery”. I stay active in my recovery by leading worship and participating in the Celebrate Recovery program at Pantano Christian Church. I like to write and sing songs about addiction, salvation and recovery. My first cd was released in March of ’07, and my second cd should be out by January ’08. My band performs concerts at the State Prison and wherever anyone will listen – listen to our message that there is freedom in Jesus Christ, no matter what your addiction might be.
