Born in Detroit, Michigan (which may explain her desire for the Motown sound), Cher was actually raised in Clarksburg, West Virginia by her grandmother, assisted by other relatives (which may explain her love for Patsy Cline and Tammy Wynette music). At only 4’3”, some people have been known to say “Such a strong voice coming from such a small person!”

Her love of music began at a very early age. Family members have told Cher that they recall her at the age of three, sitting on the floor singing the Roy Orbison hit Pretty Woman as she played with toys. Her first guitar was given to her as a birthday present by relatives at the age of 10. An Uncle showed her how to play it, and the desire for song has just continued from there.
