My name is Velma Ritchie Anderson. I perform by the name Vela. I write the words and music for my songs. I also sing folk and bluegrass, but my heart is in country music. My cousin is Jean Ritchie, famous folk singer. My uncles and aunts are in the Bluegrass Hall of Fame, and were known as the Kelly Family and later, Don and Ben. As you can see, I have a musical family. How could I not love it? As long as I can remember, I have never wanted to do anything but sing and write. I put my musical career on hold to raise my children. I feel like God has given me the O.K. to pursue it now.
I live in horse country and work for a Thoroughbred magazine by day. My love for horses is the reasoning behind my album title "Runnin'' With the Horses". I couldn''t think of anything more magnificent than the horse to share the cover with me.
